Funny, i dont carry a gun, and the vast majority of britons dont carry guns, and yet i still feel safe and secure.
Maybe the reason having a gun makes you feel safe is because in your country everyone could possibly have one, whereas in britain, its just normal to assume that until someone pulls it, they arnt carrying one.
Its nice to live in a society where guns are the preserve of the hardcore underclass of criminals and police armed officers.
Our thugs therefor carry mainly knives, and your thinking "well a gun would own a knife" but, life doesnt work like that, because of the fact guns are a rarity in british society, criminals who feel they need to carry one are a rarity in british society, therefor, if i am to come across a criminal, the statistical chances are he will be carrying a knife instead of a gun, now, i like those odds more then american ones, i dont want to come across a thug at all, but if i have to, at least a knife is prospect i feel i could handle myself in better then a gun, i could grab his arm as he lunges at me and disable him, but with a gun, he just needs to squeeze the trigger and im severely injured or dead.
Of course i think pepper spray would be nice to carry but, its outlawed in britain so, :S.
Anyway in most crimes like this, the crook isnt going to give you much time to react anyway, its convenient to expect you will see every crime comming and be able to think clearly and logically in slow-motion movie style, but crooks arnt fighters, they will ussually come in quick, silent and do their damage before you can retaliate, or they will pick on the weak.
Chances are, you wont have time to pull a gun anyway, i know because, though not a rough neighbourhood, its got its share of teenage self proclaimed kings of the neighbourhood, and when your a small kid, you have a habit of having to run alot, and hiding, especially since the local estate is only 10-15 minute walk away.
