The Eastern Italian Alps played a crucial role as a bridge between the Mediterranean and the Northern Alps, and several cultural contacts are documented in this area since prehistory. However, thus far, genomically analysed prehistoric samples from this strategic area have consisted of only one Upper Palaeolithic (Villabruna) and a few Copper Age individuals, including the Tyrolean Iceman. Therefore, to define the genetic structure of alpine prehistoric groups and investigate whether cultural contacts were accompanied by genetic exchanges, we extended the genomic analyses (shotgun and capture data) to other 47 individuals from 17 archaeological sites radiocarbon dated from the Mesolithic (6380-6107 cal. BCE) to the Middle Bronze Age (1601-1295 cal. BCE).

The Mesolithic sample shows high genomic affinity with Western Hunter-Gatherers (WHGs), also with genomic contribution (~16%) from Eastern HGs, indicating genetic admixture between these two HG groups dating back at least from ~6400 cal. BCE. The alpine Neolithic genomes indicate a genetic shift associated with the arrival of the first farmers from Anatolia, showing a high Early-farmer-related ancestry (average ~87%) with limited contribution from HGs (~13%). The same ancestral model persists in most alpine individuals from the Neolithic onwards, with few changes, also evident at the Y-chromosomal level. Limited genetic impact was observed from groups carrying steppe-related ancestry, although this ancestry reached the Eastern Italian Alps, possibly through trans-alpine migrations, at least from ~2400 cal. BCE, earlier than it has been observed in northern Italy (~2200 cal. BCE). Another genetic component related to Neolithic Iranians was detected in the Eastern Italian Alps, possibly introduced through migrations of groups from southern areas. In summary, although our study highlights some gene flow from groups of different origins, it suggests also a certain genetic continuity over time in the Eastern Italian Alps compared to other European areas.

Using one's intuition until the official paper is released, I don't think its too hard to discern Mesolithic, Neolithic and Steppe enriched samples

I wonder if this sample has ancestry from the Tumulus Culture and could be used as a representative or proxy for what a south German Tumulus culture profile would look like? That or its a cross between italy and more northern regions of Europe that results in coincidental plotting with Hallstatt samples on a pca. But the preliminary Ynda calls are U152-L2. I don't know if the below is a "Celtic" subclade but still cool anyway

Thank you very much, I was able to check manually for sample SIU01 (3057) which is of particular interest to me because of my haplogroup.
As some have already said, it's really a strong R-Y3960 (46 reads). I've realigned it to T2T.

I read that dissertation years ago; it was old as an approach when it came out, let alone today.

Between late 2025 and 2026, it is possible that new studies will come out with unpublished samples from the Alps.

Recently in Trento, archaeologists discovered an Iron Age necropolis. It will take a while for geneticists to do the analysis, but it will come sooner or later.

A lot of what I posted it just speculation and digging by the community, but its still interesting nonetheless

The problem is coverage, in some perhaps too low, and dating. There may be some in the set of samples analyzed that are more recent than the time frame of the study, from Mesolithic to Middle Bronze Age, which is analyzed anyway.

The majority look local Neolithic/Calcolithic as a genetic profile. After all, the vast majority I think are G2a-L497, if I remember correctly. Even the individual that might be Y-DNA J2a has a typical local Neolithic/Chalcolithic profile, EEF + WHG.

I wonder if this sample has ancestry from the Tumulus Culture and could be used as a representative or proxy for what a south German Tumulus culture profile would look like? That or its a cross between italy and more northern regions of Europe that results in coincidental plotting with Hallstatt samples on a pca. But the preliminary Ynda calls are U152-L2. I don't know if the below is a "Celtic" subclade but still cool anyway

U152-L2 is also a common subclade among Etruscans, other than the Celts (at this point it is likely that the Raetians were genetically similar to the Etruscans, perhaps with more Celtic influences). But SIU01 aka 3057 might be some kinda of proto Alpine Celt indeed. It closely resembles some Celts found in Etruscan tombs. Obviously a more precise dating would be important.

Yes, eastern_alps:3057 (SIU01) is the sample that looks like having a genetic profile most similar to modern populations.
