European Digital Sovereignty: Why Supporting Local Tech Matters

In an era of geopolitical uncertainty and escalating tensions between Europe and the U.S., digital sovereignty is more critical than ever. Recent trade disputes, data privacy conflicts, and the risk of sanctions or regulatory clashes highlight the vulnerabilities of relying on American tech platforms. European companies, bound by strict GDPR regulations, prioritize user privacy and data protection—values that align with the interests of European citizens and businesses.

By choosing European alternatives, you’re not only safeguarding your privacy but also supporting innovation, economic resilience, and technological independence. Below is a curated list of European alternatives to popular American apps, complete with links to help you make the switch.

Security & Privacy Tiers Explained

Very High Security/Privacy: Zero-knowledge encryption, end-to-end encryption, encrypted metadata, no access to user data even by provider, open-source code

High Security/Privacy: Strong encryption (AES-256 or equivalent), EU/Swiss jurisdiction, GDPR compliant, but may have some metadata access

Medium-High Security/Privacy: Standard encryption, reputable jurisdiction, but may collect more user data or require additional payment for advanced encryption

Best Use Cases

  • Maximum Privacy: Proton Drive, Internxt, Cryptee, TeamDrive - ideal for sensitive documents, journalists, activists
  • Team Collaboration: TeamDrive, kDrive, Nextcloud - built for secure business file sharing
  • Budget-Conscious: Degoo (free), Koofr (lifetime), kDrive - affordable options with decent security
  • Self-Hosting: Nextcloud - complete control over your data infrastructure
  • Lifetime Plans: pCloud, Icedrive, Koofr - one-time payment options
  • Enterprise/Business: Ionos, OVHcloud, Scaleway, T-Systems - infrastructure and compliance focus

Pros & Cons Comparison

The "Zero-Knowledge" Privacy Specialists

  • Proton Drive (Switzerland)
    • Pros: High trust reputation (makers of Proton Mail), end-to-end encryption for everything (including metadata), integrated docs editor, open-source clients.
    • Cons: Slower speeds than less secure rivals, higher price per GB, ecosystem lock-in (best if you use Proton Mail).
  • Internxt (Spain)
    • Pros: Open-source, Zero-Knowledge encryption by default (even on free plans), clean interface, focuses on Web3 technology.
    • Cons: Slower speeds than pCloud, no file versioning, limited media playback features.
  • Cryptee (Estonia)
    • Pros: Deniable encryption ("Ghost" folders), unhackable design (client-side AES-256), excellent for photos and documents.
    • Cons: Not a general file backup tool (no desktop "sync" folder), requires a browser/PWA to use.
  • TeamDrive (Germany)
    • Pros: Security-first (Zero-Knowledge by default), GDPR and GoBD compliant, trusted by German government/enterprises.
    • Cons: Enterprise-focused interface, can be expensive for individuals, rigid structure.
  • IceDrive (UK)
    • Pros: Unique "drive mounting" on Windows (feels like a USB stick), uses Twofish encryption (highly secure), beautiful interface.
    • Cons: Zero-knowledge is only for the "Encrypted" folder (not the whole drive), UK jurisdiction (Five Eyes member).

The "Feature-Rich" & Value Providers

  • pCloud (Switzerland/US)
    • Pros: Fast speeds, "Lifetime" payment options, excellent media player (audio/video streaming).
    • Cons: Zero-Knowledge encryption ("Crypto" folder) costs extra (subscription or fee), strict on copyright (scans non-encrypted files).
  • kDrive (Switzerland - Infomaniak)
    • Pros: Very affordable, includes a full office suite (Docs, Sheets), email hosting options, Swiss privacy laws.
    • Cons: Not Zero-Knowledge by default (Infomaniak manages keys unless you use external tools), mostly Europe-centric speeds.
  • Koofr (Slovenia)
    • Pros: Only service that connects other clouds (Dropbox, GDrive) into one interface, no tracking cookies, supports rclone/WebDAV.
    • Cons: No native Zero-Knowledge encryption in the web app (requires "Vault" add-on), no video streaming.
  • Jottacloud (Norway)
    • Pros: "Unlimited" storage (personal plan), excellent bulk backup speeds, Green energy/privacy-friendly.
    • Cons: Speeds throttled after 5TB upload, no Zero-Knowledge encryption (files are accessible to the system for deduplication).
  • Degoo (Sweden)
    • Pros: Massive free tier (100GB).
    • Cons:High Risk. Numerous reports of accounts being terminated without appeal for "copyright" or "inactivity" despite paid plans. The "Zero Knowledge" claim is disputed.

The Self-Hosted & Infrastructure Giants

  • Nextcloud (Global/Germany)
    • Pros: The ultimate DIY option. You control everything. Thousands of apps (Calendar, Tasks, Deck).
    • Cons: Requires technical skill to self-host (or paying a provider), performance depends on your server.
  • OVHcloud / Scaleway (France)
    • Pros: Extremely cheap "Object Storage" (S3 compatible) for developers/backups. High data sovereignty (EU-only).
    • Cons: These are Infrastructure (IaaS), not "Drives." You need third-party software (like Cyberduck or a NAS) to use them as storage.
  • Ionos (Germany - HiDrive)
    • Pros: Supports standard protocols (FTP, WebDAV, rSync) natively, reliable for business backups.
    • Cons: Basic interface, no file versioning (major drawback for ransomware protection), often lacks collaboration tools.
  • T-Systems (Germany)
    • Pros: Deutsche Telekom backing (maximum reliability), strict German compliance.
    • Cons: "MagentaCLOUD" (consumer) is often just a rebranded Nextcloud with fewer features; Enterprise "Open Telekom Cloud" is too complex for individuals.

5. Photo Apps

If you are looking for a privacy-focused alternative to Google Photos that stores data within the EU and offers smart search features, here is a comparison of the top-rated options as of 2026.

At the moment Ente Photos is the only one with an advanced photo editor like Google Photos. PixelUnion and pCloud and basic photo editors. Memories has a plugin to edit photos. The other currently don't have any editing features.

* Nextcloud Talk performance depends heavily on the "High Performance Backend" (HPB). Without it, it is suitable for small groups (under 10).

Key Takeaways for Decision Making

  • For Maximum Privacy (Zero Knowledge): Internxt Meet is the strongest choice if you want guaranteed zero-knowledge architecture where even the provider cannot see your data.
  • For Large Webinars: ClickMeeting and Livestorm are the specialized tools for marketing events, capable of handling 1,000 attendees with built-in analytics and lead capture features.
  • For Education & Government: OpenTalk and alfaview are specifically engineered for compliance and structured meetings, offering features like roll-calls, voting, and breakout rooms that replicate a classroom or council environment.
  • For Developers/Integration: Digital Samba and Nextcloud Talk are best. Digital Samba offers a robust API for embedding video into your own product, while Nextcloud integrates video directly into your private file storage cloud.

Note that Avast and Avira have been acquired by a US-based multinational a few years ago.

BitDefender is generally considered the best antivirus on the market, although ESET is the best rated (4.9) on Play Store.

10. VPN Service

Alternatives to: IPVanish, Private Internet Access (PIA), Norton VPN

VPN services are in theory a good way to protect your privacy but you have to be careful which one you choose. Many VPNs, especially free or obscure ones, pose serious risks like data logging, selling user info to third parties, injecting malware, or using vulnerable code. Studies show nearly two-thirds of free VPNs leak data or grant excessive permissions, and fake apps mimic legit ones to steal credentials. That's why it's important to stick with reputable ones like those listed below.

Key Takeaways

  • Best Value:Surfshark is the clear winner for families or users with many devices due to its unlimited connections and low long-term price.
  • Top Performance:NordVPN and ProtonVPN now boast massive server networks (over 8,000 and 11,000 respectively), offering the best speeds and reliability for power users.
  • Privacy Specialist:Mullvad remains unique for its refusal to collect any personal data (not even email), making it the choice for extreme privacy needs, though it sacrifices streaming capabilities.
Beware that Bitdefender VPN (included in the BitDefender Antivirus bundle) is a Romanian company but uses third-party Pango/Hotspot Shield infrastructure from the United States rather than being fully independent. This is an important consideration for privacy-conscious users, as the United States is a member of the Five Eyes intelligence alliance, which means US-based VPN providers can potentially be subject to data requests from US intelligence agencies. That is why it is not listed here.

Curve Pay is a multi-bank wallet and card that sits between your real cards and merchants, letting you link multiple debit/credit cards (and PayPal) and then pay with just one Curve “layer” in-store or online.

Signature Features

  • Go Back in Time: move a past transaction from one underlying card to another (e.g., from debit to cashback credit), up to 30 days on free, 120 days on Metal.
  • Smart Rules: automatically route transactions to specific cards based on merchant type, country, or amount.
  • Cashback and rewards: earn Curve cashback (often 1–20% at selected partners) on top of your card’s own rewards and spend it from the Curve balance.
  • FX optimisation: use interbank Mastercard rates and avoid some foreign transaction surcharges imposed by banks.
  • Security layer: freeze one Curve card to protect all linked cards, hide real card numbers, and centralise spending analytics.

14. Operating System

Alternatives to Windows or MacOS (PC)

For Windows users looking to switch to Linux, several distributions offer user-friendly interfaces, familiar workflows, and strong community support. The most recommended options prioritize ease of use while maintaining the flexibility and power that Linux provides.

DistributionCountry/OriginEase of UseKey Features
Linux MintFrance 🇫🇷Very EasyWindows-like Cinnamon desktop, pre-installed multimedia codecs, minimal learning curve, excellent for older hardware
Zorin OSIreland 🇮🇪Very EasyCustomisable interface mimicking Windows/macOS, built-in disk encryption, designed specifically for Windows switchers
Ubuntu LTSUK 🇬🇧EasyGNOME desktop, 5-year security updates, massive software repository, excellent hardware support
ManjaroAustria 🇦🇹ModerateRolling release model, choice of Xfce/KDE/GNOME, latest software updates, customisable

Top Recommendations by Use Case

For Maximum Windows Similarity

Linux Mint with Cinnamon desktop is consistently rated as the best Windows replacement, offering a familiar taskbar, start menu, and traditional application layout. Zorin OS is specifically designed for Windows users and can mimic the Windows 11 interface almost identically.

For Long-Term Stability

Ubuntu LTS (Long Term Support) provides five years of security updates and bug fixes, making it ideal for users who want a stable, well-supported system. Its massive community ensures extensive documentation and quick solutions to common problems.

For Latest Software

Manjaro uses a rolling release model, providing continuous updates with the latest software versions rather than waiting for major releases. This Arch-based distribution makes cutting-edge Linux accessible to beginners without the complexity of pure Arch Linux.

Alternatives to Android (Mobile)

Several open-source and privacy-focused mobile OS alternatives to Android offer varying degrees of customization, security, and Linux-native experiences. Unfortunately if you have an iPhone or iPad, you are stuck with iOS.

All of them are open-source, so the country of origin doesn't really matter. Sailfish OS is the only one that is not fully opensource (some proprietary kernel modules/UI), but it is from Finland.

Top Recommendations by Use Case

LineageOS
LineageOS is a popular custom ROM forked from Android, extending device lifespan with official builds for over 100 smartphones and tablets years after vendor support ends. It strips Google apps for a bloat-free experience while supporting full Google Play compatibility via optional GApps, emphasizing user customization through themes and tweaks. Ideal for reviving old hardware, but requires manual flashing and lacks enterprise-level security hardening.

GrapheneOS
GrapheneOS prioritizes top-tier security and privacy on Google Pixel devices, hardening the Android base with exploit mitigations, verified boot, and no Google services by default. It sandboxes apps rigorously and supports Auditor for remote attestation, making it the choice for high-threat users. Limited to Pixels for optimal hardware integration, it offers excellent stability but minimal app ecosystem tweaks without third-party additions.

CalyxOS
CalyxOS balances privacy with usability on Pixels, Fairphones, and select Motorolas by including microG for limited Google compatibility without full Play Services. It bundles apps like Seedvault for encrypted backups and F-Droid, focusing on de-Googling while maintaining smooth daily performance. Strong for privacy-conscious users needing some Android apps, though it trails GrapheneOS in raw security features.

/e/OS
/e/OS, built on LineageOS, provides a fully de-Googled ecosystem with microG, its own app store, and cloud services for everyday use on Fairphones and other Lineage-compatible devices. It emphasizes easy setup and Murena cloud alternatives to Google Drive, appealing to users seeking a polished, ethical Android replacement. Device support is broad but reliant on community ports, with good stability for non-power users.

Sailfish OS
Sailfish OS delivers a gesture-driven Linux interface on Jolla and Sony Xperia devices, prioritizing privacy and offline functionality with partial Android app support via Alien Dalvik emulator. Developed by Sailfish Technologies, it supports dual-boot and LTE calling where available, suiting minimalists who value unique UI over app volume. Stability is solid on supported hardware, but community is small and ports are rare.

Ubuntu Touch
Ubuntu Touch from UBports offers a native Linux mobile OS with convergence (phone-to-desktop mode) on 80+ devices like Xiaomi and OnePlus models. It uses Waydroid for Android apps and focuses on privacy with scopes for quick info access, steadily improving through community efforts. Best for Linux fans wanting HAL-based hardware access, though app ecosystem remains niche and battery life varies.

postmarketOS
postmarketOS ports Alpine Linux to phones with a 10-year support promise, using interfaces like Plasma Mobile or Phosh for a true desktop-like experience on aging hardware. It excels in longevity for tinkerers, with mainline kernel efforts for broad device compatibility and Waydroid for apps. Highly experimental, it demands technical skills for setup and often faces Wi-Fi or camera glitches.

Plasma Mobile
Plasma Mobile brings KDE Plasma's desktop environment to mobiles like PinePhone and Fairphone, enabling seamless workflow convergence with on-device file editing. Running on postmarketOS or other distros, it supports Waydroid for apps and shines in customization for power users. Still in beta, it offers promising polish but struggles with driver stability on non-dev devices.

Note that there are many other European weather apps, but many are specialised in one country or region (e.g. Met Office for UK and Ireland), while others may not be available in English and therefore were not included here. One of the best rated weather apps is neither European, nor American, but Japanese: Weawow (rated 4.9 on Play Store and App Store, but no desktop version).

Comparison

Foreca: "The King of Rain"

Foreca (from Finland) has gained massive respect recently because they don't just use one model; they use machine learning to blend data from multiple sources.
  • Hyper-Local Rain: Their "Precipitation by the minute" feature is widely considered more reliable than Apple Weather or AccuWeather for European cities.
  • Transparency: Unlike many apps that hide their features behind a paywall, Foreca gives you almost all premium features for free (radar, meteograms, and severe alerts) and only charges a small fee to remove ads.
  • The "Source" for Others: Interestingly, many other famous apps (like Carrot Weather and Microsoft Weather) actually buy their data from Foreca.

Meteoblue: The "Swiss Army Knife"

Meteoblue is famous for its Learning Multi-Model (mLM), which uses AI to weigh different models based on their historical accuracy for your specific coordinate.
  • Pros: The "Where2Go" feature finds the sunniest spot within a 50km radius.
  • Cons: Some of the most detailed charts (Meteograms) require a subscription.

Open-Meteo: The "Invisible" Powerhouse

This isn't an app you'll find on the App Store; it's an Open Source API. If you see a custom weather widget on a European website or a smart home dashboard, it’s likely powered by Open-Meteo.
  • Pros: No API keys required; integrates data from national services like DWD (Germany) and Météo-France.
  • Cons: Requires technical knowledge (or a third-party app that uses their API) to use.

WeatherPro: The "Industry Veteran"

Despite various UI changes over the years, WeatherPro remains the "serious" choice for those who want data from MeteoGroup, Europe’s largest private weather entity.
  • Pros: Highly reliable for severe weather warnings in Central Europe.
  • Cons: The free version is heavily restricted compared to the others.

Windy.com: The "Data Scientist's" Map

Windy is unique because it doesn't just give you one forecast. It lets you toggle between the ECMWF (most accurate for Europe), ICON (German), and GFS (American). If all three models show rain at 4:00 PM, you can bet your umbrella on it.
  • Pros: Incredible satellite and radar layers; used by pilots and sailors.
  • Cons: The interface can be overwhelming for casual users.

Yr.no: The "Privacy-First" Choice

Run by the Norwegian Meteorological Institute, this app is a public service. In 2026, it remains the gold standard for ad-free, tracker-free weather.
  • Pros: Beautiful "Sky" scroll view; extremely accurate for Northern/Western Europe.
  • Cons: Fewer advanced "layers" (like CAPE index or dust) compared to Windy.

22. AI Chatbots

Alternative to: ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Grok

Mistral AI (France 🇫🇷 )

Euria (Switzerland 🇨🇭 )

Euria by Infomaniak is a free, privacy-focused, eco-friendly AI assistant developed by the Swiss cloud provider Infomaniak, hosted entirely in Switzerland on renewable energy infrastructure that recovers heat to warm homes.

Euria is currently rated 4.7 both on App Store and Play Store.

Lumo AI (Switzerland 🇨🇭 )

Lumo is presented as a “zero-access encrypted” AI assistant by Proton, designed so chats stay confidential. Proton also states it does not track or record your conversations.

Lumo is currently rated 4.6 on App Store and 4.0 on Play Store.

Loveable AI (Sweden 🇸🇪)

Loveable is a “vibe coding” platform that lets people build apps and websites by describing what they want in chat prompts, aimed at letting users build without coding. It's web based only (no smartphone app).

Bielik AI (Poland 🇵🇱)

Poland's first open-source large language model with 11 billion parameters, specifically trained on Polish language data to understand cultural context and local nuances.

23. Translation

DeepL (Germany 🇩🇪)

Alternative to: Google Translate, Microsoft Translator

DeepL is renowned for its highly accurate and nuanced translations, leveraging advanced AI models trained on vast multilingual datasets. It supports a wide range of languages and offers both free and professional plans, making it a top choice for individuals and businesses seeking precise, natural-sounding translations.

DeepL is rated 4.7 on Play Store, against only 4.2 for Google Translate.

While Kobo is Canadian/Japanese, it is the most recommended alternative in Europe due to its strong partnerships with European retailers (like Bol.com in the Netherlands and Belgium) and its support for open formats like EPUB. Kobo devices also integrate with OverDrive/Libby for library books, which is a big plus for many readers.

PocketBook is the leading European e-reader manufacturer, founded in 2007 and headquartered in Lugano, Switzerland. The company produces high-quality e-readers with E-Ink displays and now distributes products in over 40 countries. PocketBook devices are open to multiple bookstores and support various formats including EPUB, PDF, and MOBI. In July 2020, PocketBook launched Europe's first color e-reader with E-Ink Print Color technology displaying 4,096 colors.

ReadEra is a free, ad-free e-book reader app for Android (not a dedicated e-reader device). It supports a wide range of formats, including EPUB, PDF, DOC, MOBI, FB2, and more. It’s praised for its user-friendly interface, lack of ads, and features like bookmarks, customizable reading settings, and automatic detection of books on your device.

There is no real European alternative to Amazon Kindle. Many European book stores sell ebooks that can be read on the variety of European eBook reading apps (and devices), but there isn't any comprehensive multi-language online bookstore with its own reading app and in-app book purchases like Kindle. However the Japanese company Rakuten Kobo is very similar to Kindle and has many partnerships with European book sellers.

FlinkGermany 🇩🇪Germany, NetherlandsUltra-fast grocery and food delivery (10-15 minutes), dark store model, eco-friendly delivery options

Just Eat and Takeaway.com were originally two distinct companies founded respectively in Denmark and the Netherlands. They merged in 2020 and the company is based in Amsterdam. In my experience it is far superior to Uber Eats. The app is easier to use, with more filters, clearer opening times, and cheaper delivery fees for the same restaurants. YouTuber Evan Edinger compared the fees between delivery apps and Just Eat/Takaway was the most advantageous. For example the restaurant commission for Just Eat/Takaway is usually around 14%, against 25 to 35% for Deliveroo, Uber Eats or Glovo.

Note that Deliveroo and Wolt were acquired by the American company DoorDash in 2025 and 2022 respectively. Therefore, although they are still based in Europe, the ownership is not European anymore.

I've been using ProtonMail for many years now and it's truly the best free e-mail provider I know. Firefox is still my main browser but I have recently tried Vivaldi and was very impressed.

Boycotting American products does not necessarily mean to stop using them, especially if there is no viable alternative. One good example is YouTube. Boycotting could simply mean using an ad blocker or watching videos using browser like Opera or Vivaldi that has an inbuilt ad blocker. I've been doing it for years anyway, not because I wanted to boycott Google at the time but simply because I cannot stand the ads.

Europe’s digital ecosystem is still highly dependent on foreign, especially US, technology companies across key parts of the digital stack such as cloud services, software platforms, AI, and cybersecurity. This creates economic and security risks, weakens Europe’s digital sovereignty, and limits its political and regulatory influence. Europe must invest in the development of its own tech ecosystem, EuroStack is one such initiative.
EuroStack is a strategic blueprint to strengthen Europe’s digital autonomy by building a sovereign digital infrastructure stack, from hardware to AI, that lessens dependence on non-European technology. Is a strategy to reduce these dependencies by building a stronger European digital ecosystem from the ground up, covering everything from raw materials and chips to networks, cloud infrastructure, software, data, and AI. The digital stack is organized in layers, where each layer relies on the one below it: physical resources support chip production, chips enable networks and devices, networks support cloud services, cloud enables software platforms, and software powers data and AI applications.
Developing the idea a bit further the EuroStack digital framework is structured as a layered technology ecosystem that spans from physical resources up to advanced digital services. At the base are raw materials, energy, and water, which support semiconductor manufacturing and data infrastructure. Above this sit the chips layer, covering semiconductor design and fabrication, followed by networks that include broadband, mobile (5G/6G), satellite connectivity, and core telecom infrastructure. On top of networks is the cloud layer, which provides scalable computing and storage, then the software layer, which includes operating systems, enterprise platforms, and development tools. At the highest level are data and artificial intelligence systems, covering AI models, analytics platforms, and data-sharing ecosystems. IoT and connected devices operate across several layers, linking physical assets to cloud and AI services. Together, these layers form a vertically integrated digital stack that EuroStack aims to make more resilient, interoperable, and sovereign within Europe.
Today, leadership in these layers is concentrated in a few countries and companies. The US and China dominate AI, software, and cloud services, Taiwan and South Korea lead advanced chip manufacturing, and China controls many critical raw materials. Europe remains strong in telecom infrastructure, industrial technologies, and some parts of the semiconductor sector, and is developing its own ecosystem with companies such as ASML, Nokia, OVHcloud, Mistral, SAP, and others.
EuroStack is technically possible because Europe already has many key capabilities. However, it is difficult to implement due to economic and political challenges. Competing with global tech giants requires large, long-term investments and better coordination across European countries. Political fragmentation and short-term policymaking slow progress.
In practice, EuroStack is more likely to succeed as a long-term strategy to improve resilience and reduce critical dependencies rather than to fully replace global tech leaders. If supported by sustained funding, coordinated policy, and market integration, it can strengthen Europe’s digital autonomy, security, and competitiveness over time.

I'm going to check out some of these. Thanks for sharing. As a Romanian, I'm sad to say that I was very disappointed with BitDefender. Someone from America managed to hack my PC despite having BitDefender installed.

I have updated the categories Cloud, Photo apps, Productivity, Delivery apps, AI and Navigation.
